]Volodymyr Lytvyn, Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine met on Friday with Herman Van Rompuy, President of the European Council.
"Your visit for us is a great honour and support, as today Ukraine faces rather complicated period of life", V. Lytvyn declared at the beginning of the meeting. "It is necessary to pass extremely important decision and the Parliament now is a center of their discussions, V. Lytvyn added."
The Head of the Parliament added that today it is essential "to preserve the democratic experience and implement economic reforms, that is, introduce economics to the democracy."
The Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine is convinced that Ukraine "is supposed to conduct an active dialogue with the community, harmonize its decisions with rules existing in European community."
In his turn, President of the European Council declared that the relations between Ukraine and European Union "are not only of economic or business character." EU and Ukraine, according to him "are connected by the political democracy" they "share common values supremacy of law, development of the democratic institutions, freedom of speech and mass media."
Mr. Herman Van Rompuy emphasised that today Ukraine needs to provide the political stability though it is extremely necessary to reform the economics and society, thus the Parliament plays the leading role in these processes.
President of the European Council also declared that Ukraine-EU summit, planned on November of the current year, proves these words and the fact the European Union deems Ukraine its strategic partner.
He declared that "principal tasks" of the relations Ukraine-EU are negotiations regarding the signing of the treaty on association and zone of free trade, dialogue on implementation of visa-free regime and modernization of the energy sphere with its further development.
"This cooperation coincides with our vision of the relations with EU", V. Lytvyn stressed and declared that the cooperation is extremely important for us as on the level of European Parliament and its leaders as on the level of the factions and committees.
He is convinced that Ukraine should actively participate now in the European processes.
